Office Liquidation Cheat Sheet

As organizations find themselves faced with the task of liquidating their office assets due to downsizing, relocation, or closure, efficient management of this process is crucial.

What follows is a simple how to guide, but of course you could just call GOL!!!

  1. The first step should be to conduct a thorough inventory of all office assets, including furniture, equipment, and electronics.
  2. Once the inventory is complete, assess the condition and value of each asset. Items in good condition may fetch higher prices on the resale market, while outdated or damaged items may have limited value.
  3. When liquidating office assets, businesses have several disposal options to consider, including selling, donating, recycling, or disposing of items. Explore multiple disposal channels to maximize returns and minimize waste.
  4. Don’t be afraid to negotiate with buyers and vendors to secure the best possible deals. Negotiating bulk discounts with liquidators or offering package deals to buyers can help increase overall returns. Be flexible and open to creative solutions that benefit both parties.
  5. Coordinate with vendors, movers, and disposal services to ensure timely removal of assets and minimize disruptions to business operations. Clear communication and careful planning are key to avoiding delays and complications.
  6. Keep detailed records of all transactions and disposals throughout the liquidation process.

By implementing these strategies, businesses can maximize returns and streamline the office liquidation process. With careful planning and efficient execution, office liquidation can be a manageable and rewarding endeavor for businesses of all sizes.

It’s Not Easy Being Green

To quote Kermit, “It’s not easy being green”, and that’s especially true in today’s office environment.

To be committed to sustainability requires a commitment and stewardship from upper management that goes way beyond using recycled paper!

Ways to help the planet from your office run the gamut from such basic things as reusable water bottles and coffee cups, recycling bins, and LED lighting to more elaborate devices, such as solar panels and rooftop water sourcing.

Yet between those two chasms lie a multitude of ways for one’s work environment to be renewable, such as eco-friendly ink and toner, refillable pens, dry erase boards vs paper, and cloth napkins instead of disposable ones.

Other simple solutions include being plant friendly, purchasing organic or locally sourced snacks, recycling unusable technology, biodegradable cleaning products and using sunlight vs artificial whenever possible.

Even peripheral activities outside the office can be of value. Try bicycling, ride sharing, public transportation and working from home.

By incorporating these practices, offices and their business can help reduce environmental impact, and also create a healthier and more responsible workplace.

GOL Celebrates 63 Million Seconds aka 2 years!!

As the saying goes; “time flies when you’re having fun”. In just two years GOL has proven to be a leading player in the sustainable liquidation space.

Having successfully completed over 250 assignments, we are proud to share some key metrics:

  • Donated over 125 truckloads of goods with an in kind donation value of over $300k
  • Diverted over 500 tons from ending up in landfills and tipping stations
  • Helped sustainably decommission over 10MM square feet of space
  • Donated over $20k to the ASPCA to help fight animal abuse
  • Unlocked over $100K in resale value for our clientele

We would again like to send our thanks to all the many people who have made GOL the special organization that we always envisioned.

Founder, GOL

Someone Can Always Be Cheaper But Remember “Cheap Is Expensive”

Since the earliest peddlers proffered their goods in the late 1700’s the concept of “lowest price” has always been part of the equation, be it for better or for worse!!

Yet the real key to the cost of anything is the value one derives from it. In other words, paying less and getting less in return is actually more costly than the reverse when you pay more but get more in return.

And that is the overriding reason that so many people have chosen GOL for their office decommissioning activities. Our brand has grown exponentially by providing the greatest value, not the lowest price point. After each assignment, we deliver a post- project report which details what we donated to charity, what was resold, and what was sent to the recycler. We further provide verification from our recycling partner, certified tax deduction forms from the charities, and often provide a credit to clients for precious metals and resales value.

Just like there are knock off Gucci bags and Rolex Watches, forged artistic masterpieces, and fraudulent sports star memorabilia so is there imitators of GOL whose mission is to confuse and deceive the consumer.

Before you choose a partner for your office decommission make sure you ask for proof of their claims, references (not just the ones on their website), and examples of documentation provided
to other clients.

As with any large purchase, caveat emptor!

Rethinking What Has Value

In the 1st Century BC, Publilius Syrus wrote “Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it”. Almost every salesperson, business associate, corner busker and everyone in between has used a form of this hackneyed expression. Even your author is guilty of this! But it’s really time to retire this motto as it’s no longer valid.

To the homeowner a broken screen door is nothing but trash. But to many of our feathered friends it’s a vital component of their nests. A child thoughtlessly tosses away a popsicle stick, but to the wood rat it represents a foundation for their new home. The bowerbird will relentlessly seek out blue items, whether they be candy wrappers, hair clips, or even scraps of paper all in an effort to attract a mate.

America’s ‘disposal society’ which was first noted in the 70’s by social commentators and academicians and has grown to disturbing proportions. As it relates to the removal of office furniture ponder this disturbingly factoid. Economists postulate that the amount of used furniture that ended up in landfills and tipping stations in the US throughout the last decade could fill the Empire State Building over 50,000 times!

We at Green Office Liquidators are fervent believers that almost every last item in an office has the potential for re-use, repurpose, recycle or donation.

Metals Scrap – Even if damaged these items still can provide value to a charity by receiving monetary remuneration for their weight.

File Cabinets, Staplers, Refrigerators, Safes, Monitor Arms, Legs From Broken Tables, Steel Shelving, Bakers Racks, The Skeleton From Workstation Panels, Overheads, Pedestal Files, Server Racks, Workstation Surfaces, Cabling; basically anything that conducts heat or electricity.

Office Supplies – Pens, Paper, Notebooks, Old Copiers and Printers, Toner, Paper Clips, Binders, Stationery, Laptops, Holiday Decorations, Unopened Kitchen Utensils, and Numerous Other Items Can Be Donated And Utilized By Others.

The time has come to move towards a more circular economy where we give our world a chance to rebloom and for all of us to take part in ensuring our planets’ healthy and sustainable future.

For Green Office Liquidators Its Always The Giving Season

The world famous leader Winston Churchill said “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Although spoken over 80 years ago the sentiment it brings to mind still rings true in these somewhat troubled times. I am consistently and pleasantly surprised at the number of people that reach out to GOL 7 days a week with the single minded purpose of both helping nature win and making sure their surplus office furnishings are repurposed to charity and good will. In our first 18 months we have donated over 100 truckloads of goods with an in kind donation value of over $250K. These items have gone to all manner of charity, but we would be remiss to not single out our largest and most valuable partner the Habitat for Humanity. Their ReStore located at 2111 Lakeland Ave. on Long Island accepts all manner of furniture and supplies that GOL acquires through our various liquidation projects. They also accept metals and other raw materials which they then can obtain scrap value for to further fund their worthy mission.

New Doors Open for Sustainability and Green Office Liquidations

Reports of New York City’s real estate “death” have been greatly exaggerated. As any lifelong New Yorker knows, nothing can keep this city down for very long!

Some of our real estate titans, including Mary Ann Tighe (CBRE), Larry Silverstein (Silverstein Properties), and Steve Durels (SL Green), predict that the market will continue to rebound, leasing activity will continue to rise, and that the flood of new sublease space will continue to subside.

But with over 75 million square feet of commercial space coming to lease end within the next 3 to 5 years, one thing is certain; there is sure to be excess and unwanted office furniture coming to market.

According to the EPA, up to 9 million tons of office furniture end up in landfills every single year. For years, organizations simply didn’t have access to eco-friendly office furniture removal services. Desks, chairs, cabinets, bookcases – these are present in NYC’s landfills in overwhelming amounts. But what if it didn’t have to be this way? What if there was a way to repurpose surplus office furniture and reduce your organization’s environmental footprint?

That’s exactly why GOL was developed!

We realized that the vast amounts of office furniture being disposed of in landfills are contributing heavily to the globe’s environmental crisis: greenhouse gases, toxins in the soil, and water pollution from landfill leachate. Not only is excess waste poisoning the Earth, but it’s also impacting the health of NYC’s inhabitants. If things were to change, companies needed access to green office furniture liquidators that are committed to helping increase a more sustainable environment. That’s where we come in.

GOL has been providing clients with fully sustainable, cost-effective office liquidations that have saved countless tons of furniture from their usual fate inside a landfill.

Whether GOL is involved in a commercial office move or helping with the disposition of surplus office furniture, our mission is to provide companies near NYC with the opportunity to resell, recycle, or donate their office furnishings and equipment to non-profits. This enables businesses to repurpose office furniture in an eco-friendly way.

  • Recycle: Through specialized office furniture recycling, a variety of items can be processed and their materials are reintroduced into the manufacturing cycle.

  • Resale: We can assist in the resale of office supplies. Generate revenue for your business and increase the product’s lifecycle.

  • Donation: By donating office furniture to non-profits, a product’s lifecycle is increased. Reusing office furniture is an excellent way to keep waste out of landfills, avoid dumping costs and benefit charities.

What’s more, GOL is dedicated to the fight against animal cruelty. We donate a portion of our monthly revenue to the ASPCA. We are honored to help the ASPCA provide medical attention, nutritional care and love to abused and homeless animals.

By partnering with GOL, organizations experience an enhanced “win-win.” non-profit organizations benefit from donations, you save money on your projects through furniture resale or via tax-deductible furniture donations and you, aren’t contributing to the landfill dilemma!

Everything around us in the world is changing, and time is long overdue for a shift in the way office furniture removal is performed. There has been a national shift towards eco-friendly corporate practices, and more companies than ever are looking for green office furniture removal. As a result of this shift, we have been experiencing unparalleled interest in our services.

In the past 6 weeks alone, GOL successfully helped relocate and liquidate two commercial spaces of approximately 25,000 square feet at no cost to the client! Between GOL’s donation network, resale team and metals recycling, we delivered an unparalleled level of service that not only was free but also accomplished the goal in doing our part to help save our planet.

Are you interested in learning more about sustainable office furniture recycling, resell and or donations? It’s never been easier to responsibly manage your office supplies in NYC.

Partner with GOL to save on costs and generate value for your organization, your community and the world. Keep in mind our commercial relocation services are also available with or without the need for office furniture liquidation.

May You Live in Interesting Times – Giving This Proverb an Eco-Friendly Twist

The British statesman Joseph Chamberlain addressed the English Parliament in 1898 and said, “I think that you will all agree that we are living in most interesting times. (Hear, hear.) I never remember myself a time in which our history was so full, in which day by day brought us new objects of interest, and, let me say also, new objects for anxiety. (Hear, hear.)”

Chamberlain’s sentiments remain true over 120 years later. Whether you’re in NYC, London, Singapore or Australia, each day brings many new social norms.

One of the most critical and important of these is our expanded global focus on sustainability, the environment and our planet. With over 200 million blogs dedicated to Mother Nature, it’s easy to see this as a worldwide revolution of sorts. More people than ever are inspired to use stainless steel straws, recycle their cardboard boxes, and use biodegradable products. But one area that is often overlooked is the waste caused by throwing out business furniture.

We at GOL were shocked by the dizzying amount of furniture for offices that are dumped in landfills each year—and we resolved to do our part to reduce the figure.

It’s estimated that last year over 10 million tons were deposited in landfills, generating countless greenhouse gasses and noxious emissions.

Every day in NYC, moving companies add to this problem by their focusing on profit alone. And to make matters worse, many still use “crusher trucks”’ that not only add to landfills, but belch out exhaust and pollution.

By utilizing LEED Certified Recyclers, coupled with our over 300 non-profit donation partners, our simple goal is to assure that none of our liquidated office furniture ever reaches a landfill.

In addition to providing eco-friendly furniture liquidation services, we have taken a number of simple yet impactful steps that further assist Mother Nature. All our business cards and any hard copies we send out are all printed on recycled papers, utilizing both sides of the page.

Any corrugated materials needed on the job will also be from recycled papers.

For any printed correspondence, we have chosen the font Century Gothic, which is part of the Sans Set Family. Fonts in this family exploit the least amount of ink—in fact, Century Gothic uses 30% less ink than Arial. And maybe most importantly, we are on the waiting list to repower 3 of our office furniture liquidation vehicles into clean, efficient commercial electric trucks.

We hope you can join GOL in making a difference because, “When Nature Wins, We All Win!
